After the brute force scoffed all the bacon and burgers, drank all my beer, and retired to their dens to sleep it off, I was able to tidy up the hole, dig it to the correct depth and get the octagonal shape ready for the concrete base.

I’ve stuck short posts into the ground to mark the depth at 150mm, the thickness the concrete will be, with all their tops being level.
